Costa Rica Police Seize Drugs from Ship’s Hull

The Drug Control Police (PCD) of the Ministry of Public Security in Costa Rica have seized a cocaine load attached to the hull of container ship Cap Palmerston (IMO 9344643) in Caldera de Esparza, Punta Arenas, Costa Rica.

Divers noticed something strange in the hull of a ship on January 13 after the vessel had arrived from Colombia. The agents confirmed the discovery of 47 kilograms of cocaine in the compartment, but no crew were detained.

The 2007-built vessel sailed again on January 14. The officials found the illicit cargo during an underwater search of the Liberia-flagged, 22,914 dwt Cap Palmerston. The divers discovered the drugs in a compartment which was attached to the hull of the containership.

The ship is currently sailing to the US port of Long Beach, where it is expected to arrive on January 24, AIS data provided by Marine Traffic shows.
