Croatia is set to partner with China to carry out infrastructure projects including ports and railways.

At a meeting in Sofia between China’s Premier Li Keqiang and Croatia’s Prime Minister Andrej Plenković to discuss current and future projects, China’s investment in Croatia, Croatia’s commitment to positively promote the development of Europe-China relations and work to involve small and medium-sized enterprises in projects within both countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China said that Mr Keqiang communicated that: “China is willing to continue to combine the needs of Croatia to support its own enterprises in participating in the construction of ports, railways, and other transportation infrastructures in Croatia in accordance with the laws and regulations of the European Union and market principles.”

New opportunities

According to the Ministry, Mr Keqiang said that China is “willing” to continue work with Croatia to promote China-Croatia relations for “constant and new development.” China Road & Bridge Corporation has already been contracted to build the Pelješac Bridge in Croatia.

“It is hoped that the two countries will keep making efforts to jointly forge an example project between China and Croatia and even between China and Europe,” Mr Keqiang stated.

It is hoped that focus on the cooperation of small and medium-sized enterprises from the two countries in infrastructure development will create new business opportunities, boost support for China-Croatia enterprise and potentially opportunities between China and Central and Eastern European countries.

Discussing future projects following the summit of the heads of government of the 16+1 platform countries, which took place the day after the meeting, Mr Plenković also commented that “now we need a step forward in the field of railway infrastructure and sea ports. We want to develop our cooperation with China in that area.”
