En route to a routine port in Singapore, the guided missile destroyer USS John S McCain, part of the US Navy’s 7th Fleet, collided with a Liberian-flagged vessel, Alnic MC. The incident was reported in waters to the east of Singapore and the Straits of Malacca.
Ten sailors are missing and five have been injured from the incident. The collision resulted in considerable damage to both vessels. The destroyer sustained damage on its port side after hitting the Alnic MC at 6:24am (local time). It resulted in water logging in other compartments of the vessel including crew berths, machinery and communications rooms. The oil tanker reported damage to a compartment at the front of the ship about seven metres above its waterline. There were no injuries to crew on the vessel.
The search for the missing sailors is underway with the support of Singaporean ships, helicopters and tug boats, as well as US Navy aircraft.
