Leading Shipper Message To Ports

Terminal operators should “get to know” the partners involved in port selection, Hapag-Lloyd UK and Ireland managing director Cameron Bowie has advised.

Speaking at the UK Ports Conference in London, Mr Bowie said that “having a partnership mentality is key” for terminals and that terminal operators should remain close to decision-makers in different carrier departments “to position their terminal for the future, bringing all stakeholders together”.

“We like to see terminal operators engaging with all stakeholders — any that have a bearing on our ability to move through the port,” the director said.

He later added: “We advise [that] terminal operators work strategically with carriers rather than just for the current contract.”

According to Mr Bowie, some ports are unable to keep up with fast trade growth and all carriers are struggling with on-time deliveries due to congestion problems.

In addition, a rising problem in the UK is pilot availability, with vessels on time but having to wait to secure a pilot to bring them in.

As for ship size growth, the managing director believed that this will slow down, although trade will keep growing.
