Greeks Account for 25% Secondhand Vessel Purchase in 2017


Greek owners accounted for almost one in four secondhand ship purchases during 2017. The owners from Greece have been in an advantageous position with an investment of around USD 4.47 billion, accounting for almost 23 per cent of secondhand purchases this year.

A total of 280 vessels were bought by Greek shipping companies and nationals. Bulkers led the list with 170 purchases, followed by 79 tankers, 35 containerships and three LNG carriers.

Chinese companies ranked second with USD 2.25 billion investment on 205 vessels, followed by Norwegian firms which purchased 98 ships.

Greek shipping firms were also on the top in terms of selling. The Greeks have offloaded 179 vesels for USD 2.3 billion during 2017. So far as newbuild orders are concerned, the Greek interests have inked major deals, mainly in tanker segment.
